Like a child with a natural sense of wonder, I consider process to be an important part of my art-making experience. I work with a variety of mediums, from watercolor to embroidery, but there is a commonality between the materials. I love the relationship between the artist and the medium and it is this continuous battle of power that I long for when I create. The sensitive nature of thread, ink, clay, paint, and charcoal is what excites me.
When I create for the sake of creating, my work often addresses issues surrounding gender stereotypes, human relationships, my local community, identity, mortality, and the common distresses of every-day life. My purpose for making is usually to raise awareness to an issue and share in an experience or insight. I don't like to make work about myself; I aim to inspire the viewer with themes surrounding universal distresses and relatable topics. This is tied closely to my teaching philosophy; I want to create a dialog with people about the topic and share in our experiences. This is at the core of what it means to be a human being in the 21st century; establishing oneself in a human network and adapting in an ever-changing world.
